Institute of Biology

Institute of Biology of Komi Scientific Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IB Komi SC UB RAS) was organized in 1962. The Institute is the largest the academic centre for ecological and biological research on the European North-East Russia and is a part of Federal Research Centre «Komi Scientific Centre». The Institute consists of six departments and four laboratories, Zoological museum, Botanical garden and herbarium (SYKO). The Institute guides unique collections: «Scientific Collection of Experimental Animals», «Scientific Collection of Living Plants», and «Scientific Herbarium». «Scientific Biological Museum», «Lyaly Forest-ecological Monitoring Station», and two centers of collective using «Chromatography» and «Molecular biology». The Institute has dissertation Council by botany and ecology.

Institute of Biology cooperates with education institutions – Syktyvkar State University, Syktyvkar Forest Institute and Vyatka State University, organizes international and Russian Scientific Conferences, provides scientific cooperation with EC, USA, Turkey, Vietnam and other countries.

One of the main topics of the Institute is the studying biodiversity, structural and functional organization, stability and productivity of taiga and tundra ecosystems. By the moment, scientists from the Institute collected unique data on flora and vegetation of the European North-East Russia: about 4000 species of vascular plants, algae, mosses, lichens and fungi. Researchers of the Institute created the system of Nature Protected Areas (NPA), generalized data on fauna and ecology of animals and insects, suggested recommendations how to protect rare species. Another focus of the Institute research are genesis and properties of soils, as well as their classification. Physiological and biochemical features, adaptive an protection reactions were studied in photosynthetic apparatus of boreal plants. New data were obtained for structural and functional organization of underground metameric complex of roots. Specialists developed fundamental basis for low dozes impact on cells, organisms and populations. Complex studies were performed for ecdysteroids and ecdysteroid containing adaptogenic drugs. On the basis of microorganisms oil destructors several biosorbents were created.
