Institute of Biology, Komi Science Centre, Ural Division RAS was founded in 1962 on the basis of six laboratories of Komi Division AS USSR for complex research of biological resources for their protection and rational use. Prof. P.P. Vavilov, associated member of AS USSR, academician of RAAS, chairman of Komi Division AS USSR presidium (1957-1965) was the founder and the first director of the Institute (1962-1965). Dr. I.V. Zaboeva headed the Institute in 1965-1985. Dr. M.V. Getsen was at the head of the Institute in 1986-1988. At present (since 1988) Dr. Anatoly I. Taskaev is the director of the Institute.

Today the Institute is the only one institution in the RAS system that conducts fundamental ecobiological research to find complex solution of problems of rational nature use in the European Northeast of Russia.
