ACTIVITY OF THE CRYOSOL WORKING GROUP (CWG) DURING THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 'EXTREME PHENOMENA IN CRYOSPHERE: BASIC AND APPLIED ASPECTS', 12-15 MAY 2002, PUSHCHINO, RUSSIA

1. Dr. J. Kimble presented the plenary lecture that was co-authored by S. Goryachkin, C. Tarnocai, and S. Waltman- "Extreme phenomena and application of the Northern Circumpolar Soil Database: evaluation of soil vulnerability". The possibility of Northern Circumpolar Soil Database for applied purposes was demonstrated. Several questions were asked and there was a great deal of interests in this database and its applications.

2. The member of the Cryosol working groups of IUSS & IPA held a meeting as many of the ones present in Pushchino were not at the March Meeting in Lincoln, Nebraska. The members present were (S. Goryachkin, J. Brown, D. Gilichinsky, J. Kimble, D. Konyushkov and E. M. Pfeifer) and some specialists involved in the work on the monograph and circumpolar soil database (S. Gubin, S. Maximovich). The co-chair of CWG S. Goryachkin reviewed the working group meeting held in Lincoln, USA, March 2002. He pointed out that there was again a unanimous decision to save the name "CRYOSOL Working Group" for use in the IUSS and IPA from the meeting in Lincoln. Letter was prepared and sent to the IPA leadership by signed by the co-chairs of the working group. J. Brown again pointed out that according to IPA rules the working group after 10-years activity should change both the priorities of the work and the name. The other CWG members supported the idea of the change of CWG priorities for 2003-2008 period, however, they agreed with the decision in Lincoln to save the well-known name "Cryosol working group". Finally, everybody supported this idea with the obligatory changes in CWG activity plan for 2003-2008.

CRYOSOL WORKING GROUP ACTIVITY IN 1998-2002

The objectives were to establish interactions between geocryology and soil science, to prepare a Cryosol book, a global Cryosol classification and a circumpolar soil database, and to organize the Third International Conference on Cryopedology that was held in Denmark in 2001. Charles Tarnocai (Canada) and Sergey Goryachkin (Russia) are the WG co-chairs.

Major activities since the Yellowknife Conference focused on preparation of the Northern Circumpolar Soil Database and the Soils of the Northern and Mid Latitudes Database and the various soil maps and soil carbon estimates derived from these databases. Preparation and editing of papers to be included in the Cryosol book also formed a major activity. In addition, organizing the Cryosol Symposium held at the 17th World Congress of Soil Science in Bangkok, and preparation of papers for the Congress symposium, the Third International Conference on Cryopedology held in Copenhagen in August 2001, and the 8th International Conference on Permafrost were important activities of the CWG. These activities and other working group related issues were discussed at the CWG meetings, which were held at least twice a year.

CRYOSOL WORKING GROUP ACTIVITY

Statement of Goals of the Cryosol Working Group for 2004-2008 (improved on 26/05/2004 ):

  • To develop a Circumpolar Soil Carbon Database that can be used to improve our understanding of soil carbon distribution and dynamics in permafrost-affected soils.
  • To develop an Arctic and Antarctic soil databases to enhance the classification and distribution of permafrost soils.
  • To evaluate soil carbon dynamics, sink and sources in cold environments (at high latitudes and altitudes).
  • To investigate the effect of global change on the genesis and properties of soils with permafrost.
  • To cooperate with other IPA and IUSS working groups and to supply them with the data on soil temperature and other soil properties.
