Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) living on the surface of snow in the Northern Urals, Russia - Version 1.0

Bacillariophyta are a group of unicellular and colonial algae characterized by the presence of a distinctive silica cell wall, known as a frustule. They predominantly inhabit marine and freshwater environments. Many representatives of these phototrophic organisms are also able to survive under extreme cryophilic conditions on the surface of ice and snow in polar and mountainous regions. This dataset presents the first information about diatoms found in snow samples collected from a slope snowfield on Mount Pelener (Northern Urals, northeast of the European part of Russia). The snowfield is located in the valley of a mountain stream and consists of infiltrated ice covered with summer snow. Algological samples were collected in August 2018 from the melting waves that form on snowfields during snowmelt. Samples were taken from the surface of red-brown colored snow to a depth of 4 cm using sterile plastic tubes. Diatoms were identified by their morphological characteristics in permanent preparations mounted in Elyashev’s medium. The material was examined at 1000x magnification under a Biolam-I (Russia) light microscope after treating the samples with concentrated sulfuric acid to clean the frustules. For diatom identification, standard taxonomic guides (Krammer & Lange-Bertalot, 1986, 1988, 1991a, 1991b; Krammer, 2000, 2003, and others) and several monographic works were used. Current algal nomenclature follows the international database "AlgaeBase" (Guiry & Guiry, 2026). A total of 29 Bacillariophyta species were found. The diatom assemblage of the snowfield comprises algae from two ecological groups. The first group consists of typical freshwater algae. The second group includes aerophilic organisms, often found in soils, on mosses, and in caves. Among the species identified, Pinnularia borealis, P. obscura, Nitzschia alpina, and Luticola suecorum can be considered aerophilic. The taxon Diatoma mesodon occurred with the highest abundance. The composition of the diatom assemblage in the snowfield corresponds to conditions found in oligotrophic or oligodystrophic habitats. The low concentration of basic ions and organic substances in the snowmelt water favored the development of halophobous and predominantly acidophilic diatoms, such as Diatoma mesodon, Fragilariforma virescens, Eunotia exigua, Pinnularia borealis, P. sinistra, Psammothidium helveticum, Tabellaria flocculosa, and others. Their species composition is similar to that found in the periphyton and benthos of streams, rivers, and springs in mountainous and foothill areas of various geographical regions. According to literature data, some of these species (Diatoma mesodon, Eunotia exigua, Pinnularia borealis, Tabellaria flocculosa) have also been recorded in the cryoseston of perennial snowfields in mountain systems, in glacial crevices, and in ice cores. From the identified diversity, only Pinnularia borealis can be classified as a typical cryophile. The development of algocoenoses and their distribution in the snowfield may be primarily associated with the proximity of the stream, from which algal cells are transported on the snow cover by numerous birds. Additionally, temporary meltwater pools forming in the spring may also serve as sources for snow patch inhabitants. Another possible pathway for the introduction of algae, other microorganisms, and nutrients is the transport of eolian fine earth from the surface of surrounding landscapes, as has been observed in other mountain regions. This organic dust has been found to contain cyanobacteria, green algae, diatoms, moss and fungal spores, and plant pollen (Harper, 1999; Papina et al., 2013).

Gymnadenia conopsea (L.) R.Br. (Common fragrant orchid) is a boreal Eurasian species, one of the most common orchids in northern Europe. On the territory of the Komi Republic, the species is at the northern edge of its range; it is more common in the southern and southwestern areas of the region. It grows in bogs, damp meadows, grassy-sphagnum pine forests, in green moss grass and sphagnum spruce forests, wet grass mixed forests, and alder forests, as well as on limestone, marl, and gypsum outcrops with and without grass cover. G. conopsea is propagated mostly by seeds. The species is a highly specialized entomophylous plant attracting insects, mainly lepidoptera, by the color of corolla, nectar, and pleasant smell.
The data set contains data on the distribution of G. conopsea in the Komi Republic, located in the European North-East Russia. In total, 311 localities of G. conopsea have been found within the borders of the Komi Republic, including 198 herbarium specimens and 113 occurrence records. The herbarium specimens are stored in the of Scientific Herbarium of the Institute of Biology Komi Science Centre (SYKO). The dataset includes 311 records.
The point set was prepared with data obtained as a result of field studies of the authors and acquired from vascular plant collection of SYKO herbaria.
Most of the occurrences’ descriptions included the following fields: "occurrenceID", "institutionCode", "basisOfRecord", "DatasetName", "eventDate", "year", "month", "day", "scientificName", "higherClassification", "kingdom", "phylum", "class", "order", "family", "genus", "specificEpithet", "scientificNameAuthorship", "taxonRank", "identifiedBy", "dateIdentified", "decimalLatitude", "decimalLongitude", "geodeticDatum", "coordinateUncertaintyInMeters", "verbatimCoordinateSystem", "georeferencedBy", "georeferencedDate", "continent", "country", "countryCode", "stateProvince", "county", "verbatimLocality", "language", "license", "collectionCode", "catalogNumber", "recordedBy", "otherCatalogNumbers", "associatedMedia".
The work was carried out with the financial support of the project «Herbarium funds of the biological diversity of plants and fungi of the Collection Fund of the Komarov Botanical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences: modernization, development and networking as a basis for fundamental research and improvement of genetic technologies» (Agreement No. 075-15-2021-1056 dated 09/28/2021).
