Science interests & Projects:

  • Research areas: Soils, Arctic soils, soil erosion, global climatic change, geochemical cycling, Arctic, Holocene lake sediments and man-climate-landscape interactions in Arctic regions.
  • Teaching areas: Physical Geography, soils and geochemical cycling, man and landscape in the Arctic.
  • Recent scientific projects:
    1998-1999: Dynamics of Arctic soils: Physical and chemical processes in the active layer-permafrost system of Arctic soils. Funded by the Danish Research Councils as a two years continuation of the TUPOLAR- project: The Arctic landscape (1995-1997).
    1999-2001: Sulphide mineral oxidation - a source of heavy metal pollution in Arctic ecosystems. Danced/MIKA.

  • Member of the board of directors for the AGeocenter Copenhagen
  • Secretary General of the Royal Danish Geographical Society
  • Member of the board for GRAS A/S (Geographical Ressource Analysis and Science A/S)
  • Member of the International Permafrost Association/International Union of Soil Sciences Cryosols Working Group and member of a task force on a Northern Circumpolar Soils Database.
  • Member of the terrestrial working group within the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP).
  • Chairman of the board for the Niels Kingo Jacobsen Travelling Fund
